He kept dreaming that Emily moved back to the big city, leaving him alone. He woke up in a cold sweat several times. By the time the sun rose, he was in a very cranky mood. It didn't take his employees long to figure out that they had better steer clear of him. He tried to call Emily at 8 a.m. but there was no answer. He figured she was feeding her horses. He dialed her number again at 10. It rang and rang.
After Emily had gone into the house, she waited for the sound of Jason's truck leaving, before she slid to the floor and cried. She wondered how people could be so close minded in this day and age. She lay there thinking about her options. She made a decision, then got up off the couch. She found some paper and a pen. Then she sat down at the table and began writing a letter. When she finished it, she folded it and put in an envelope. She laid it down, then went upstairs. She heard the phone ringing again at 10 but made no move to answer it. She was sitting in her rocking chair, staring out the window.
